Odorants with distinct odors appear to activate unique combinations
of glomerular modules (clusters of nearby glomeruli). Each module responds
to a particular odorant molecular feature. Different odorants that share
a molecular feature therefore tend to overlap in their spatial activity
patterns by virtue of activating some of the same modules. Shown above
are the modules we have identified to date. Both dorsal-centered and
ventral-centered orientations are shown. Modules tend to occur in medial-lateral
pairs, labeled here with upper case and lower case letters, respectively.
These lateral-medial pairs of modules probably reflect the projection
patterns of homologous olfactory sensory neurons (those expressing the
same odorant receptor gene).
